WFS 2007 Day 3 "Hydrogen Economy"

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 1 month ago

The Hydrogen Economy and the Hydrogen Highway

The presentation will describe the opportunities and challenges of a future energy economy in which hydrogen made with renewable and low-CO2 resources joins electricity as one of society's premier energy carriers. It will discuss how hydrogen and fuel cells may fit in the overall energy system, who is doing what around the world, and how hydrogen, fuel cells and related technologies can contribute to a cleaner, more prosperous and more peaceful world.

Rolf Nordstrom

Mr. Nordstrom is Director of the Upper Midwest Hydrogen Initiative (UMHI), one of the first regional, industry-led, public-private hydrogen partnerships in North America — run under the auspices of the non-profit Great Plains Institute.

The Upper Midwest Hydrogen Initiative is a US-Canadian consortium of companies, universities and non-governmental organizations from the Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and the province of Manitoba dedicated to commercializing hydrogen, fuel cells and related technologies as part of a renewable and carbon-neutral energy system.

Rolf is the original author of MinnesotaÕs first-ever report on the coming hydrogen economy and its implications. Before leaving state service, he helped shape MinnesotaÕs first law on hydrogen development and sits on the steering committee for the stateÕs Renewable Hydrogen Initiative, a public-private coalition dedicated to fulfilling MinnesotaÕs statutory goal of increasing its reliance on hydrogen as a clean energy carrier.

Mr. NordstromÕs research on hydrogen and fuel cells for the state of Minnesota was only his last during a decade with the Minnesota Environmental Quality Board (EQB) and Office of Strategic and Long-range Planning. For seven of those years he served as Assistant Director of then Governor Arne CarlsonÕs Sustainable Development Initiative, working to harmonize the stateÕs economic and environmental policies.

In addition to heading up the Great Plains InstituteÕs hydrogen and fuel cell program, Rolf is involved in the InstituteÕs Powering the Plains program and Coal Gasification Work Group.

Mr. Nordstrom has an undergraduate degree in English Literature from Carleton College and a Masters Degree in International Environmental Policy from Tufts University. He has 20 years of experience in economic and environmental policy and sustainable development, including positions with:

n                       The United States Congress

n                       World Wildlife Fund (International), in Brussels, Belgium

n                       National Wildlife Federation's, Corporate Conservation Council (Washington, DC)

n                       Global Environment Program at NYU's Stern School of Business in New York

n                       Minnesota Environmental Quality Board

n                       Minnesota Office of Strategic and Long-range Planning

He has authored and edited more than 25 publications on energy, transportation and sustainable development and speaks to a wide range of audiences. Rolf also served three years as president of the community council in St. PaulÕs Merriam Park neighborhood, where he and his wife Kathy live with their two sons, Erik, 9, and Eli, 6.
