Topic: Chaos and the Study of the Future -- Part 1)
Speaker: George Kubik
Abstract: Everyone knows what chaos is. It’s the freeway at rush hour, the last minute presentation at the office, or the behavior of your investments. Chaos is often defined as randomness or disorder. But chaos is not the lack of order. It is unorder.
This presentation addressed the subject of chaos in physical and biological systems. It also explored the growing importance of chaos to futures thinking. Join us in developing an understanding of chaos as a component of the emerging new science of complexity. (Part 2 will follow Feb. 6.)

Title: Economic Conflict: Are We On The Road To Recovery In 2010?
Topic: Caution: Economic forecasts are like a lottery
Speaker: Jim Zitek
Abstract: Everyday, I hear from businessmen, executives and other well informed people that they often feel confused about the direction and health of our economy. Worse yet, this confusion soon becomes frustration because no sooner does one "expert" tell us where the economy is headed, then another "expert" says the exact opposite.
You can eliminate both confusion and your frustration when you understand the three major approaches economists use to analyze the economy: the demand-side approach, the supply-side approach and the classical liberal approach. It is important to know how these approaches differ and how they would handle different issues. For example, what do the different approaches think causes inflation or how would they handle a stimulus program or the healthcare program?
Once you know this, the "experts" and their conflicting analyses will actually make sense. From this vantage point, I discuss the direction of the economy in depth. You will know which policies are likely to be proposed and which pieces of data each approach considers critical. More importantly, you can immediately apply the skills learned in my presentation to better understand the real economy and where it's headed. Plus which critical issues down the road could change that direction.

Topic: Future issues of Information-Knowledge-Innovation Governance in Natural Resource Management
Speaker: George Kubik
Abstract: At a time when data, information, knowledge, and innovation resources are dramatically expanding, enterprises are often unprepared for the resulting governance issues. This presentation examines the evolving factors involved in future governance decisions and policies in this important aspect of the future. The impacts of emerging changes in computers, computer-processing, sensor-effector arrays, performance amplification, multiple-scale networks, and a variety of technology and social variables will be addressed and considered.
Futures Methodology Employed: Cross-impact analysis is a major futures methodology that is commonly used to study complex relationships impacting alternative futures. This technique will be reviewed and applied to the study and examination of futures issues of information, knowledge, and Innovation governance in natural resource management.

We'll review the five major corridors and the Minnesota state plan, view two videos of bullet trains, and suggest the lineup of major competitors for train construction projects. The big question: can rail service recover a glimmer of the Golden Age of Rail in the face of entrenched air and auto travel habits.
And we'll ask whether

Technology Futures SIG
Topic: The Blue Brain Project & The Singularity
Speaker: Eric Hand
Abstract:
Since at least 1999, futurist Ray Kurzweil has been predicting that computers would be passing forms of the Turing Test by 2029 as part of a generally exponentially increasing advance in technology, especially in genetics, nanotech, and robotics. He further predicts that because superhuman intelligence will increasing influence the course of civilization, it is practically impossible for us to predict much about the future beyond about 2045.
Somewhat over a year ago, IBM, working with a Swiss University, began an extremely ambitious ten year project to create an electronic simulation of the functionality of the human neocortex. They now claim to have simulated a mouse neocortical column. To the extent this is accurate, it is very impressive, and supports the idea that Kurzweil's widely doubted predictions may be on track.

Future Studies SIG
Topic: Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Futures
Speaker: George Kubik
Abstract: Seeing dust motes in the air? Check again! You may be seeing the next generation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
This seminar examines the status and future of UAVs, as well as the expanding uses of these systems. The application of UAVs in both military and non-military areas is accelerating into domains that are deemed too dull, dangerous, or expensive for human-piloted aircraft. The future of both autonomous and remotely controlled UAVs will be addressed. The discussion will include UAV developments at the micro and nano scales.
This month, we will also address another methodology for futures studies. The subject of Genius Forecasting (or expert forecasting) will be reviewed. The seminar will include an opportunity to use genius forecasting in a practical application.

Business/Market SIG
Topic: The Future of Wall Street Ethics
Speaker: Rog Rydberg & Dick Saunders
Abstract:
What has caused the decline in Wall Street ethics over the past 10 years? Does taking both sides of a new security create a moral dilemma -- or are such practices merely "business as usual?" What are possible, probable and preferred outcomes of some Democratic senators to publicly condemn Goldman Sachs for alleged ethics violations, of an SEC civil suit for lack of disclosure, and of criminal charges against a trader?
What will be the final shape of a financial reform bill?
